This study was one of my first explorations with watercolor, completed as part of a broader study and experimentation project during my second-year painting class. The purpose of this exploration was twofold: to delve into the versatility and expressive range of watercolor as a medium, and to capture the essence of the model present in class.
In terms of process, I focused intently on observing the model, paying close attention to prominent colors, the angles and structure of the facial features, and the overall shape of the face. These elements became the foundation for the painting, guiding my choices as I experimented with layering, transparency, and blending.
This study allowed me to discover how watercolor’s fluidity could enhance subtle details while also creating bold, impactful effects. I was particularly drawn to how the medium’s unpredictable nature challenged me to balance control with spontaneity, making each brushstroke purposeful yet organic.
